A little history: Beef and Iron Wine Beef and Iron Wine was a popular tonic and offered 'recuperative and strength giving properties'. It included beef extract, iron citrate and wine. Before the First World War the British Pharmacopeia, which listed official medicines, included a range of health-giving wines including a very diluted solution of cocaine in wine (coca wine), orange wine and cinchona wine. As they were in the Pharmacopeia these could be sold without a drinks licence. 'Beef and Iron Wine' was a proprietary wine sold in off-licenses and pharmacies with licenses.
